Strengthening Rural Healthcare Through GP Representation on Hospital Boards

Strengthening Rural Healthcare Through GP Representation

While attending the Rural Doctors Association of Queensland Conference on Rural Medicine in Cairns, I was pleased to announce an initiative that represents many years of collaboration and advocacy.

Building Stronger Relationships

Throughout my six years as Chair of RACGP Victoria, I have worked to strengthen relationships between rural general practice and our regional hospitals. Those conversations have focused on how we can better integrate the expertise of rural GPs into local health service leadership and decision-making.

I’m pleased that RACGP Victoria and the Victorian Department of Health have now reached an agreement to progressively establish GP representation on every rural hospital board across Victoria.

Why GP Representation Matters

Rural GPs have a unique understanding of the communities they serve. Their involvement in hospital governance will help strengthen collaboration between hospitals and general practice while ensuring local clinical perspectives contribute to decisions that shape healthcare delivery.

A Practical Step for Rural Victoria

This initiative will be introduced progressively over the coming years and represents an important step towards building stronger partnerships across Victoria’s rural health system.

Advocacy That Delivers Long-Term Change

Meaningful advocacy is rarely achieved through a single meeting or announcement. It is built through trusted relationships, collaboration and a shared commitment to improving outcomes for patients and communities.

I look forward to seeing this initiative strengthen connections between rural hospitals and general practice across Victoria.
